Dog Sledding

Dog sledding is an Inuit tradition dating back 2000 years. It is simply something you must try at least once in your life. Imagine sliding across the snow at a leisurely pace with panting, energetic dogs out in front and a knowledgeable sled driver as musher. This tour will take you far off the beaten track in the surreal white landscapes of Greenland. We set out on shorter or longer trips from Ilulissat.

Snowmobile 

Snowmobile during the day

We will be riding by snowmobile to the little hunter settlement north of Ilulissat – Oqaatsut. With it’s approximately 40 inhabitants it is truly a charming site to visit. The snowmobile guided tour takes about 3 hours and it starts in front of the Hotel Arctic. It will follow the old trail going north, crossing lakes, frozen fjords and hill with an amazing view of the Disko Island and the Disko bay. You will cross the frozen sea to reach Oqaatsut (It’s a one hour snowmobile drive from Ilulissat). In Oqaatsut you will take a break and enjoy coffee or tea, eat snacks and discover the traditional settlement and the inhabitants’ way of living.
On your way back to Ilulissat you will take a different route and explore the backcountry, passing frozen waterfalls, dramatic rock cliffs and enjoy the view of the perfect winter world.

Do you want the opportunity to experience Northern lights whilst in Greenland? On nights with clear sky, it is possible to spot the amazing sight of Northern lights dancing across the sky. The story told by the Greenlanders is that it is the souls of our ancestors playing soccer with a seal head. If you whistle, the northern light will grow and they will come down to earth and take your head to play soccer with it. If this story has not scared you off the 2 hour tour will start in front of Hotel Arctic. You will drive to the Big Akinnaq range and cross the upper lakes to the Nalluarsuk hut (40 min from Ilulissat by snow mobile). Inside the warm heated hut you will take a break and drink some coffee or tea and have a look out for the northern light through the window or from outside the terrace.

Boat tours 

Go ice cruising between icebergs of all kinds of shapes and sizes, turn off the engine and sit and observe the stunning natural beauty all around in amazing silence. Depending on conditions, this tour may also visit the small village of Rodebay, a former trading post for Dutch whalers. Here you’ll get the feel of life in a remote Inuit village.

The settlement of Oqaatsut – the name means cormorants and it used to be a popular spot for cormorants and later on it was known as a whaling station – that’s where the name Rodebay comes from - meaning “red bay”. Oqaatsut is known for their production of “qullukkat” which is dried fish, so a freeze-dried strip of the back of the Halibut. It’s said that the qullukkat from this area is the best in Greenland due to the fish from the Disko area. You will have time to take a walk around the little settlement. On your way to and from Oqaatsut you sail among huge icebergs in an endless variety of formations and colors. If you are lucky you might spot a whale.

Icefjord cruise
We sail out before into the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Ilulissat Icefjord, where all the amazing icebergs are. Even in the winter this is an amazing boat tour and you will be able to get close (as close as the captain allows, due to safety distance) to the gigantic icebergs and see all the blue, grey and white nuances in the ice. Even if it is cloudy the different nuances of the icebergs will be breathtaking. For a few hours, you will be able to get lost in the beautiful view and leave all worries behind and just take in thousand-year-old ice floating by your eyes. Depending on the company, the captain will cut the engine, a guide will tell you a few facts about the ice, and you will be able to ask questions.

Guided town walk 

A guided town walk will enhance your understanding of the Greenlandic culture and history, which will give the other experiences in Greenland a new perspective. SUMMER ACTIVITIES IN THE ILULISSAT AREA

Boat tours

When visiting Disko Bay, a boat tour is a must! Cruising between the huge icebergs that have calved from the glacier in the area is an extraordinary experience. Choose your experience on your boating tour; go to the glacier, visit a charming hunter’s village, go whale watching or spice up the experience on an icefjord cruise in the midnight sun, see the options below: 

The Settlement of Ilimanaq – the name means: ”likely” or ”expected” - the place of hope. This area is known for its rich animal life which is where it got its name from. Sailing to Ilimanaq from Ilulissat you have to cross the famous Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO’s World Heritage site since 2004. While you take in the unbelievable and unforgettable sight of the big icebergs you will feel the cold chill coming from the surrounding ice and if you are lucky you might spot a whale or two, before arriving to the little settlement south of Ilulissat.

Whale watching 
If you want to increase your chances of spotting a whale while being in Greenland this would be the ideal trip for you. While looking for the whales, you can enjoy the beautiful sight of the breathtaking icebergs. When we spot a whale we cut the engine so we can enjoy the sight of the whale in silence. That way it’s also easier to spot the whale again when it comes up for air. The whales you might spot are: Humpback, fin and mink whales. (Please note that whales are wild animals, therefore sightings cannot be guaranteed).

Icefjord cruise
We sail out before sunset so it is possible for you to enjoy the magnificent sight of the icebergs glistening in the beautiful light. From May 21 to July 24 the sun does not set below the horizon, but you will get sunset-like conditions. Even if it is cloudy the different nuances of the icebergs will be breathtaking. For a few hours, you will be able to get lost in the beautiful view and leave all worries behind and just take in thousand-year-old ice floating by your eyes. Depending on the company, the captain will cut the engine, a guide will tell you a few facts about the ice, and you will be able to ask questions.

Eqi – The calving glacier
Eqi – meaning where the land, water and ice meets. It is only possible in a few places in the Disko area to get close enough to see and hear a glacier calve. When we arrive to the glacier we cut the engine and enjoy the silence. The water around you will sizzle like a soda pop with the sound of the air bubbles in the ice exploding. Sometimes you will hear something that sounds familiar. But without a cloud in the sky how can it sound like thunder? Whenever the ice is either moving or calving it creates a thunder like sound. It’s truly magnificent to see and hear. Lunch is included in this trip.

Fishing trip
A big part of the Greenlandic diet consists of fish, either fresh or dried and if you, like the Greenlanders like fish, this trip will give you the perfect opportunity to try fishing in the Disko bay area. On a good day you can catch a good batch of fish easily, Greenlanders put the fish in efficient. We will sail out and the captain will chose the best possible place to fish. While waiting for the fish to bite you can enjoy the amazing surrounding view and wave to the fellow Greenlandic fishers. If you are lucky, you will be able to bring home fish like; Arctic cod, halibut, catfish, red fish. If it’s mid-June – early July you might be able to catch the capelin (a small forage fish of the smelt family). You don’t need any experience with fishing. If you catch something it is possible for you to bring home the fish and if you are staying at a hotel it’s possible to give the fish to the kitchen and they’ll cook the fish for you; because who doesn’t love the taste of freshly caught fish?

Greenland from above

Do what few people get to experience; fly over and in between gigantic icebergs calved from the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ilulissat Icefjord - and get a new perspective of the enormous size of Greenland. Whether you get this view from a helicopter or a small plane, doesn’t really matter, both options are available. Either way, this tour will leave lasting memories.

Hiking

You don’t have to go far to get the most stunning views of the famous Ilulissat icefjord. Navigate among lakes, mountains and dramatic cliffs, or follow the wooden pathway that passes an old Inuit settlement; on the way you can still see the relics that reveal their presence going back in time.

Guided town walk

A guided town walk will enhance your understanding of Greenlandic culture and history, adding new perspective to all your Greenland experiences. Among other rich experiences, on this tour you’ll visit the fishermen at the harbour and the hunters at their trading post “Brædtet”. Inuit traditions

Explore the Inuit way of living by visiting a local family, have coffee and learn about the everyday life and traditions in Greenland. Attend a local "kaffemik", translated: "Coffee-mik" a celebration greenlanders have whenever there is a birthday, a wedding or first day of school. Greenlanders open up their homes to friends and family and serve some wonderful cake and hot coffee. 

The calving Eqi Glacier

Eqip Sermia, also called “the calving glacier”, is located about 80 kilometers north of Ilulissat and it calves very often. This enables most visitors to experience both the sound and sight of this fantastic natural phenomenon. Go on a day tour by boat or stay overnight in a hut by the glacier front. A day hike to (and on) the Ice Sheet is an available tour addition.

Visit to Disko Island

Disko Island is located 100km west of Ilulissat. Geologically speaking, this island is far younger than the mainland, and is therefore very different. The island mostly consists of high and steep basalt mountains that were created by volcanic activity 25- 65 million years ago. Offering truly fascinating landscapes, Disko Island is ideal for hiking tours and a great place to spot whales!

Kayaking

Kayaking is a great way to have a truly authentic Greenlandic experience. On this tour, you’ll paddle among the icebergs like a local, visit an Inuit settlement and enjoy a traditional Greenlandic lunch. As an add-on, you can kayak near the Ilulissat Icefjord - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - in the Midnight Sun!

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES IN NUUK

City Walk (by foot)

This guided city walk will take you through Greenland’s colonial history and its impact on present day society. While you walk through the old part of town you will hear about the encounter between the Inuit and the European culture and the development of present day society. The statues and buildings all contribute to the story of the rapid transformation of the old Inuit way of life; the struggle for survival and adaptation by the colonizers and the inevitable clash of beliefs and merge of cultures. DAY TRIPS FROM NARSARSUAQ

Boat trip to the Qooroq Ice Fjord

You will sail from Narsarsuaq to the mouth of the Qooroq Ice fjord. You will zig zag your way through the amazing icebergs from the Icefjord, until you reach the bottom of the Icefjord and finally get to see the breathtaking view of the glorious glacier. The glacier calves approx. 200.000 tons, which is half the empire state building – in one day. Some of these icebergs are almost sapphire blue and will leave your memory card full of thousands of pictures. It is truly a sight you will want to remember. You will have time to enjoy the sight when the captain decides to turn off the engine and let you drift through the calm icy waters. The silence will only be interrupted by the sound of the sizzling sound icebergs make when melting and the soft sounds of the icebergs floating around the boat. If you are lucky you will also hear the thunder like sound from the glacier calving. On the trip, the local guide will gather ice for our cocktails and you can listen to the popping sounds as countless, tiny thousand-year-old compressed air bubbles escape from the ice cubes in our glasses.

Qassiarsuk (Brattahlid)

The beautiful village Qassiarsuk is only 15 min by boat across of Narsarsuaq. The sight of the charming village will take you back in time as the brown gravel road leads you to the reconstruction of Tjodhilde’s Church and a Norse longhouse. This is the place where the Viking Eric the Red decided to settle in the year 982. And when you see the lush green grass and the shining yellow flowers you understand why. The bright colors everywhere will make you happy that you decided to visit this cute little sheep farming village.

You will also be able to learn a little about the farmer Otto Frederiksen that founded Qassiarsuk as a sheep farm in 1924. His house is still standing and it is possible to enter and see how they used to live.

Igaliku (Gardar)

Itilleq is the harbor for Igaliku. Itilleq is situated 4 km from the wonderful little settlement of Igaliku. You can either walk or hire a transfer to the little settlement. If you walk, you will be able to say you have walked on the King’s Road (It was named so after the King’s visit in 1952). The village has the reputation of being the most beautiful settlement in Greenland and a few famous Greenlandic people spend their summers there. From the highest point of the King’s road you will get an amazing view overlooking the green fields of Igaliku with the snow covered mountain in the background.

The history of the place is impressive and today it is a thriving sheep farming area, with a school, church and a shop. What more do you need?

You can enjoy lunch made with local products at the café in the Country Hotel. The return journey is by boat to Narsarsuaq in the late afternoon/evening.
