Alpine Ski Touring: The Greenlandic Way

The view down.

A spot of skiing, perhaps? When skiers conjure images of what it means to alpine ski, taking a lift or some other kind of assist up to a slope that has been taken by many others  is of course a great experience, but that is not what we are talking about here. Alpine skiing in Greenland is something else entirely and we put this post together to tell you a little bit more about it.

Hell is other people

Jean-Paul Sartre

If hell is other people, and the are no other people, does that make it heaven? Just an idea.

What makes skiing in Greenland so great?

Greenland is an excellent skiing destination for three main reasons:

Earning their turns.

1. You, Your Skis, Your Nature.

Greenland is incredibly sparsely populated, with 2,166,000 kmin area and a population of 55,984, giving a population density of 0.14/km2, Greenland is ranked as having the lowest population density in the world. Given this, there is an extremely good chance that you and your group will be the only people there.

2. First Runs, Virgin Powder

Whats better than skiing down to a fjord with a wonderful view all the way to sea level? Being the first one to do it, of course! Greenland is dripping (not dripping, because then it wouldn’t be snow) in fresh powder; it’s there, and it’s yours for the taking.

The best thing about skiing backwards is you can see where you’ve been.

3. Earn your Turns

This is the Greenlandic way. With only three ski lifts in the whole of Greenland,  you really have to earn your turns, put in the work and by extension get the best reward: the deepest fjord and the highest peak. You do it for the adventure, you do it for the passion. You do it to see somewhere new. Thats why you would choose Greenland: would you have it any other way?

Be a Pioneer!

If alpine ski touring is your thing,  then we have just the ticket. Join us on the remote peaks in East Greenland, in the tiny hunter village of Kuummiut,  flanked by dramatic peaks. If you are feeling more adventurous, on request we can take you to the far northeast of Greenland, well inside the arctic circle, where you can witness the true midnight sun in the Heart of the Arctic.  Earn your turns, and be a pioneer!
